EJ Grey Motor Engine Number

by NSC129 » Sun Sep 04, 2022 9:07 am

Grey motor Engine numbers, i was asked if an EJ Grey motor engine number looked original, the first 2 characters were stamped in heavier than the following 4 numbers which were stamped lighter.

J7 followed by 6949.
I cant upload an image. As much as i have tried to reduce the image size.

Can anyone answer if there Original Grey Motor engine numbers are stamped consistently the same depth?

Hi,
It seems unlikely anyone would bother to renumber one of these doesn't it? Fresh short-motors were available new unstamped up to HG, and had to get a number issued by police. The stampings on these are very obvious and nothing like yhe conformity of your image.

I'd speculate it is original stamping, whether or not original to a particular car is another matter of course.

An engine number of 6949 would make it an FX block from October 1949. It would have a 3" bore if unmolested, but may have been bored larger at some time in it's life. From memory, conrods would be rifle drilled to oil the little ends at that engine number (though conrods can be changed between blocks).

If someone had tried to make it look like a later engine they may have stamped the J7 digits in. An engine number of J76949 would make it an EJ Holden block. It would have a 3.062" bore if unmolested. It would have an oil hole drilled from the cam gallery to squirt into the dizzy gear. There should be stiffening seams (ribbing) around the block - the ribs are the easiest way to tell (some photos here: https://forums.autosport.com/topic/2116 ... ng-design/).

Cheers,
Harv

Interesting to see Lee Nicole posting on there Harv. He still sells a few parts and wheels out of Edwardstown via gumtree.
