ej 3 speed gear box

I have a 62 ej grey motor with 3 speed crash box which i am having trouble with selecting 1st/reverse. Static, i can select 1st without hassle a dozen times or so, then it gets stuck and i cant select 1st/reverse. I know the selectors have play in them but the 1st/reverse side has a little more play than the 2nd/3rd side. at the gear box the selector coming out of the gear box for 1st/reverse has a bit of slop/play. Is the problem in the linkage or the gear box?

Probably linkage.

Check that the little arms on the box don't have flogged out holes, then adjust linkage as per the workshop manual.
